Pioneer Park in St. George (with Dixie Rock)

One of the most fabulous and FREE places to visit in St. George is Pioneer Park. It is amazing – but it definitely isn’t your typical park.

There is NO grass or playgrounds.

BUT the entire 52 acre park is a natural playground full of exploring fun.

Pioneer Park in St George has easy, medium and difficult hikes for all ranges and ages.

What is Pioneer Park/Dixie Rock?

This rustic community park is a rock climber’s paradise – both expert and beginner. You can stay close to the parking lot and still climb several rocks or you can hike and venture out of find a Boy Scout Cave, historical pioneer cabin, slot canyons and a connection in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve.

One the other side of this rock, the word Dixie overlooks St George. It is a fun and easy hike will steps and a bridge – even though it looks difficult from most of the angles.

Dixie Rock (which is a big red rock with DIXIE written on it and also called Sugarloaf) can be climbed and gives beautiful views of downtown, the St. George Temple, Zions National Park, White Dome and even to Arizona.

This park has a large trellis pavilion with two barbecues and fire ring, several smaller picnic areas with tables, two with metal trellis pavilions, and a separate fire pit with an amphitheater.  Bathrooms are close to the parking area too.

Park Discovery in Cedar City

Park Discovery in Cedar City was designed by kids and made for kids. It is one of the best parks in Cedar City. Patterned after Discovery Park in Pleasant Grove, this park is amazing. Kids love it because of the imagination and structure. Parents love it because kids are fenced in and there is a great area for toddlers and younger kids.

The park hides behind the Iron County School District office building. There is a parking lot just past the district office building.

What is the History of Park Discovery?

The neat history of this park is that it was all done by volunteers. It started with a couple of mothers who got land donated and ended up with more than 6000 volunteers.

Nebo Loop Scenic Byway

A longer scenic byway, the Mount Nebo Scenic Loop is simply spectacular.  This byway is gorgeous year round, but in the fall you will see the most vivid and vivacious colors throughout the entire drive.

Where is Mt Nebo Loop Scenic Byway?

Since it is a byway, there are two entrances or exits. You can  start at the north in Payson. Take I-15 and get off on 800 S in Payson. It will then take up all the way up to the canyon which become the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway.

The second entrance is from the south and is just east of Nephi. The byway begins off of Hwy 132 and goes north,

Going north or south, you will not regret taking the drive!

How Long Does it Take to Drive Mt Nebo Loop Scenic Byway?

That depends on you. If you simply drive and do not get out at any of the overlooks, plan on 1 hour and 15 minutes. However, the area is really neat. There is SO MUCH you can do. There are a lot of hikes! Don’t miss out. There are several lookouts. And there are a lot of campgrounds. So you can go and enjoy the area for much more than an hour!
